Justin Reeve, Carol McGuire, Penny Lindballe brainstormed with show hosts Lorna Costantini and Matt Montagne about the development of a project that would help parents. Here is the recording from our discussions.

This is a collaborative effort to create a site specifically for parents of K-12 students. We find that parents are often not aware of the educational uses of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media. This site is a collaborative effort to help correct this deficiency. It will be run by
volunteer educators and parents who wish to set up online courses, gather resources, and contribute to helping parents understand educational technology better. This project is done in the spirit of open source.
The project can be found at www.digitalparent.net
The purpose of this project is to …
-
Show parents how the computer and the Internet can be used for educational purposes.
Collect resources on Internet safety for families.
Link to commonly used 2.0 open source programs.
Provide information regarding the impacts (positive and negative) of digital footprints.
Create interactive activities for parents to do with their children.
Illustrate the use of social media in the classroom.
Compile laws that apply to students and student Internet safety
To start the process we need your assistance in focusing our efforts to set up courses that parents would attend.
Complete the survey yourself and then please pass the link to the survey onto any parents you know so that we can get their feedback. You are welcome to join in the development of this project. Please create an account at www.digitalparent.net and drop your name, your organization name into the welcome forum and let us know how you would like to participate.
Our next brainstorming session will be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 at www.EdTechtalk.com/live
