Secure Social networking for the classroom using Edmodo

January 26, 2010

I had the opportunity to interview Jeff O’Hara, co- founder of the social networking application called Edmodo. After 10 years of managing the infrastructure for a Chicago suburban school district, Jeff formulated the idea of a safe secure social network. One that teachers and schools can use to allow students to learn the benefit of social networking while avoiding outside influences. It is the same concept used in social networks like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter but in a controlled environment managed by the classroom teacher. I particularly like the use of a group code to restrict access to a class. Students are given a code to access a group and the teacher has the ability to change that code so students cannot give access to unapproved users.

teacher training -best practices – parent teacher conferences

January 23, 2010

For some parents the only contact they have with their child’s teacher is at parent teacher conferences. Listening to the recorded Seedlings show at Edtechtalk around training for parent teacher conferences, I was prompted to highlight some of the shows we have held. Last fall Lisa Parisi joined Parents as Partners to discuss student led parent teacher conferences A really good message:” Students are continually motivated to produce their best works knowing they will be presenting their assignments and school work at the conferences.”

This week Seedlings hosts Bob Sprankle, Alice Barr and Cheryl Oakes added some good discussion and ideas about training for running a parent teacher conference.

Do you want safe Twittering for students? Use Twiducate

January 19, 2010

Are you having a hard time convincing parents of the value of Twitter?

A group of teachers in South west Ontario have developed a free software application Twiducate that provides a secure environment for teacher to use to teach students how to twitter. Here is your chance to let student explore social networking in a classroom setting.
From the twiducate team:

With so many students using social media and promoting unprotected profiles, we thought twiducate might help teach proper online etiquette in schools.

Twiducate.com is a free resource for educators. Developed in 2009, our goal is to create a medium for teachers and students to continue their learning outside the classroom. We attempt to fill a need for a more educationally focused, safe venue for teachers, schools, and home learners in a social networking environment.
We understand that many social networking sites exist, however the control of content is limited for teachers. Also, many of these social networking sites are continuously being blocked by school firewalls and administrators.

Home Access scheme to provide internet access to low-income families has gone live in England. Silicon.com reports:“PC giveaway for school kids is go: 270,000 low-income families getting internet access at home courtesy of the government…” It is hopeful to think about the possibilities here in contrast to my post yesterday about the persistent and deepening savage inequalities for children in failing American schools

Are you paying attention to your Child’s cellphone use?

January 6, 2010

I am not sure that parents might have understood the implication of a blog post titled “twitter saved me $764.13″ and may have passed up the opportunity for some good parent professional development. In his blog post entitled “twitter saved me $764.13″ Dean Shareski describes the power of social networking and the value of the application “Twitter”.

So for all those parents who may think of social networking is a fad or bizzare human failing to communicate face to face you really need to read about Dean’s experience with his daughter and their Rogers cellphone bill.

Twitter is not just about what some one says they ate for breakfast. I can’t do the story justice – you just have to read it and then hopefully smile to your self and get an account.
