Grade 1 teacher sets the bar for all classroom teachers.

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Aviva Dunsinger, a Grade 1 teacher in Ancaster, Ontario ( http://grade1.litcircuits.com/) Saturday June 12, 2010. on Classroom 2.0 Live. Along with show hosts Kim Caise and Peggy George, we were given a presentation about the use of web 2.0 tools in a Grade 1 classroom. If you aren’t sure how web 2.0 tools are used or if you wonder how they would be used in a Grade 1 classroom, take the time to listen to Aviva’s presentation.

For all you parents reading this – you will be excited by the ways that Aviva uses technology to include the parents of her students in many of the activities. Her students are blogging on kidblogs and the parents can read the comments. The students use Skype and Google Docs to collaborate with each other in their class as well as students in other classrooms. Aviva along with other teachers like Zoe Branigan (http://pipedreams.edublogs.org/) are pioneers changing the face of education for their students. Look out high school teachers!!

Aviva uses Twitter to reinforce the concepts she introduces in the classroom. “I send out a tweet asking them to find 4 squared shaped objects and ask them to tweet back what they found” The parents have their own twitter accounts and they work with their children to reply to Aviva. That is my definition of parent engagement using technology. Hopefully the parents will pass on the message to all school boards to catch the spirit!!

Visit the Archives of Classroom 20.com for an extensive list of the resources that Aviva uses with her students.

Great pick for a featured teacher! Aviva is an amazing educator and it blows me away what she does with her grade 1 students. She definitely does set the bar high!
